Trevon Diggs Released by Green Bay Packers
Trevon Diggs’ brief tenure with the Green Bay Packers came to an end on Tuesday, as the cornerback was released after playing just two games for the team. The move marks another twist in the journey of the former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro, who is now a free agent heading into the 2026 NFL season.
After signing a lucrative five-year, $97 million extension with the Cowboys, Diggs was released in December 2025, just days after a season-ending ACL injury in 2023. Despite his talent, his performance and contract made him a candidate for a midseason departure, and the Cowboys opted to part ways early. This allowed Diggs to join the Packers for the final stretch of the regular season and playoffs.
In his time with Green Bay, Diggs started in their season finale against Minnesota, registering two tackles. He also played one snap in the Packers’ Wild Card loss to Chicago. Diggs’ release frees up $15 million in cap space for Green Bay in 2026, and he now heads to free agency with the hope of securing a spot on another contending team for the upcoming season.
Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Search
Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys are deep into their search for a new defensive coordinator following the dismissal of Matt Eberflus. The Cowboys’ defense had struggled during Eberflus’ tenure, allowing the most points in franchise history. Owner Jerry Jones expressed disappointment with the results and emphasized a fresh approach for 2026.
The Cowboys have already interviewed two candidates for the role: Daronte Jones, Minnesota’s defensive passing game coordinator, and Jonathan Gannon, former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator. Jones has quickly gained traction in the league, with interviews lined up with the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, and New York Jets.
Additionally, Philadelphia’s Christian Parker, the team’s defensive passing game coordinator, is set for an interview, and Denver’s Jim Leonhard, the Broncos’ defensive passing game coordinator, may also be considered after the AFC Championship Game.
Despite the flurry of interviews, the Cowboys are committed to taking their time in the process. Jones stressed the importance of collaboration in making the best decision for the team’s future.
Tyler Booker Earns All-Rookie Honors
On a positive note, Cowboys rookie guard Tyler Booker earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie Team. Booker, who started all 15 games he played in during his first season, was a standout in both pass protection and the run game. His impressive performance earned him praise from teammate Tyler Smith, who called him one of the best rookies he has seen during his time with the Cowboys.
Booker’s consistency and development were key factors in Dallas’ strong offensive line play, particularly in the run game, where the Cowboys averaged 125.6 yards per game. In his second season, Booker is aiming to build on his success and eliminate the rookie mistakes that sometimes crept into his play. With high expectations for his growth, Booker could take another major leap in his development during Year 2.
Looking Ahead for the Cowboys
As the Cowboys continue their search for a new defensive coordinator, the franchise is also focused on ensuring that key players like Booker continue to progress. Whether it’s in free agency or the draft, Dallas is looking to strengthen its defense while solidifying the offensive line for the 2026 season.
The offseason promises to be a busy one for the Cowboys, with key decisions on the horizon that will impact the future of the team.
